Bill,
I think the Citigroup report is stunning. They have gone one step further than just admitting that central banks "suppress the price of gold". Gold price suppression, in its mildest form, could be construed as intermittent "intervention". Intervention in currency markets has long been admitted by Central banks so it is not difficult to stretch this modus operandus to the gold market. Citigroup, however, actually talks of Central Banks "sacrificing control of gold". The only way the CB’s could sacrifice "control of gold" would be if they were in control of gold in the first place! This is exactly what GATA has claimed that the Central Banks and their Cartel of Bullion Bank Groupies have "controlled" the gold market for more than a decade and made it do exactly what they wanted.
QUOTE
"Official sales ran hot in 2007, offset by rapid de-hedging. Gold undoubtedly faced headwinds this year from resurgent central bank selling, which was clearly timed to cap the gold price. Our sense is that central banks have been forced to choose between global recession or sacrificing control of gold, and have chosen the perceived lesser of two evils. This reflationary dynamic also seems to be playing out in oil markets."
END
Citigroup now joins Credit Agricole in confirming the GATA claims. This is in addition to confessions by Alan Greenspan before Congress, William White at the BIS, and Barrick in Federal Court that Central Banks manipulate the gold price.
I guess the only thing that the nay-sayers need to really believe what GATA has been saying is $2000 gold, but hang on, that is coming too!
Cheers
Adrian

après Citigroup, c'est au tour de Crédit Suisse de RECONNAITRE ( ce que les recherches du Gata indiquent depuis 1999) que les ventes des BC masquent le déficit Offre/ demande ..
masquent ... ou comblent ...aaarf

Citation:
This primary deficit has been masked by the secondary supply of gold into the market mainly from central bank sales.

et le commentaire de C.Powell...mdr1

Citation:
Of course these assertions are hardly new to GATA's supporters and friends of gold generally, but it is important that they now have been made by still another major financial house that cannot be easily dismissed as crackpot.

While the Credit Suisse report does not impute to central banks the motive of price suppression, as was done in recent gold market reports published by Sprott Asset Management, Cheuvreux, and CitiGroup, it emphasizes the impact of central bank sales on the gold market and surely will raise among investors the question of why central banks would keep selling their best-performing asset.
And in an era of unprecedented monetary debasement, that question almost answers itself.
