- Citation :
- "The deteriorating conditions threaten to worsen the recessions in these countries and could cause currencies to collapse," Obama wrote.
"Together, these factors, particularly if they become more acute, will further lower global growth and, as we saw during the Asian financial crisis, they will cause U.S. growth, jobs, and exports to fall even more sharply," he added.
He said an enlargement of the NAB facility of up to $500 billion would allow for increased participation by emerging market economies, in particular China and India.
www.lemetropolecafe.comOn the IMF gold sales talk…
Bill,
Regarding the GATA dispatch that Obama wants to loan the IMF 100 B$ which as he says in his letter to Congress…
QUOTE
Such participation effectively represents an exchange of assets rather than a budgetary expenditure, and it will not result in budgetary outlays or any increase in the deficit. That is because when the United States transfers dollars to the IMF under the NAB, the United States receives in exchange another monetary asset in the form of a liquid, interest-bearing claim on the IMF, which is backed by the IMF's strong financial position, including its significant holdings of gold.
END
This loan is backed by the IMF’s significant holdings in gold? Notice he didn’t specify the exact amount of 3,217 mt. If we take gold at $920/oz then 100B$ is equivalent to 3396 mt of gold.
Hmmm…that’s interesting! The loan that the US is making is equivalent to 100% of the supposed IMF gold reserve. This raises some interesting questions. If they are going to raise the NAB to 500B$ what will back the other 400B$ because if it is the same stash of gold then what Obama says in his letter is not true…
QUOTE
it is conceptually similar to investing government funds in a financial asset with minimal or no risk and is consistent with the findings of the 1967 President's Commission on Budget Concepts.
END
How can 100 B$ of gold (at today’s price) back 500B$ of loans with "minimal or no risk"?? Perhaps he got risk management advice from AIG! That statement would only be true if the loans were much smaller than the value of the reserves.
If the US has already borrowed surreptitiously all the IMF gold and disposed of it then a size of loan that is the same as the current value of the gold reserves makes perfect sense. If at some future date it is revealed this gold has been borrowed and sold then the US could simply propose forgiving the 100B$ loan and they will have gotten around the approval process to sell IMF gold and they will have cash settled for a much lower price than the true market value.
This truly would be as he describes it "an exchange of assets"! or simply the biggest heist of the century!
Food for thought.
Cheers
Adrian…
