tapping into investor concern about a weak U.S. dollar and inflation.

to a person familiar with the matter.

Glocap Search CEO Adam Zoia tells FINS.com editor Laura Lorber that
hedge fund compensation will be up in 2009, according to Glocap's
recent survey.

The Wall Street Journal, which reported the
launch earlier Wednesday, said that Paulson will invest $250 million in
the gold fund.

Paulson already has been building gold positions in the firm's current
funds, becoming the largest holder of the SPDR Gold Trust
exchange-traded fund /quotes/comstock/13*!gld/quotes/nls/gld

earlier this year, according to regulatory filings.

Paulson also held stakes in gold-mining companies AngloGold Ashanti

Rather than allowing such gold positions to become a larger and larger
part of Paulson's main hedge funds, the firm decided to create a new
vehicle to focus on the strategy, the person said on condition of
anonymity.
Paulson took a similar approach as the firm's subprime trades grew
earlier this decade. The Paulson Credit Opportunities fund was launched
to focus on the strategy. It generated returns of almost 600% in 2007
as the housing market began to crash and mortgage-related securities
collapsed.

many governments slashed interest rates and rolled out other
unprecedented fiscal and monetary measures to avert another Great
Depression.

That seems to have worked, but the efforts have weakened the U.S.
dollar and stoked concern about inflation in future. Gold is considered
a hedge against inflation, and the precious metal has hit new records
in recent days
